California Living - Ride Me by superkev California Living - Ride Me by superkev
To me, this is what California living is all about: an active lifestyle and beautiful, sunny days. This one was taken at Santa Monica Beach.

That sky is just... just fabulous. I can't find any other word for it, it's so beautiful. And the angle you took the photo at is great. The sharpness of all the detail is really pretty good, kind of interesting how the front tire of the first one in the row can seem flat at some times, then detailed at others. Can't quite explain it, maybe it's because I'm suffering sleep deprivation right now. *shrugs* Looks like a magazine photograph, actually. Good job, par usual.

Sweet. I have to say, even though I love your studio work, it's nice to see you taking pictures outside. ;) Question: do you use filters on your lenses when shooting, or do you do adjustments in post? I only ask because I don't recall you ever talking about it, maybe I just haven't noticed....

i never use filters. i figure why put a cheap piece of glass in front of my expensive lenses. the most post-processing i usually do is a black and white conversion (in which i'll simulate a colored filter by adjusting channels) or contrast, saturation and temperture adjustment in my RAW processing software (which also simulates filters). i avoid doing such adjustments in photoshop though, because they degrade the quality of the color. :)

Hmm... Heh...

I love the sky...

I don't like the angle though. Maybe it's just me being weird...

But the bikes mesh too much with the other stuff in the background. I can't hardly see 'em. Heh.

Pretty good though, overall...
My dad would love those bikes.

ooh this is nice. the wide angle really gives a sleek appearance to the bikes (love those bikes btw.)

question, how is that deep blue sky gradient done in so many photos I see?

Ah... That blue sky and the palm trees seem such an invitation for vacations...

Just one and a half week more :fingerscrossed:

Really love how clean this shot is. The sky, the foreground.

The bikes stand there ready for action. I like how the wideangle's caught everything. The only thing I have against this one is the shadow that falls over the back of the bikes... For some reason I think it hinders the photo a little bit.

I think you captured it perfectly. I live here in Huntington Beach CA which is about 45 mins away from Santa Monica, and almost every day of summer looks like that, even durning the winter it often looks like that. I wish we got some cool cloud cover every now and then...oh well. Anyway I love what you have done here. The slight fisheye effect works very well, and I love the colors. Well done.

Love the wide open feeling of this one and the colo(u)r saturation is simply insane. Think 'Tricky one' is still my fave of your California Living series, but this one hasn't been commented to death (yet), so I thought I'd get a comment in before it's too late. ;-)

Keep up the good work, guv.

What distortion effect is the person above me talking about?
Reply
:iconsuperkev:
superkev Featured By Owner Jul 10, 2005  Professional Photographer
with super wide angle lenses, you get a "perspective distortion" meaning everything close looks extra close, and everything far looks extra far. that's why you shouldn't shoot portraits with a wide angle lens unless you want the nose to look enormous :P

To me, it appears to be blowing in the same direction as the flags are flapping, not towards the camera.
